The biggest benefit of having a cargo trailer is that you can take your precious cargo with you wherever you choose to roam. Tips for Hauling Your Trailer Through Mountains

• Take it slow. Go down the mountain NO faster than you went up. Since your trailer load will be pushing you along, maintaining a slow and steady speed is critical for maintaining control of the towing vehicle. Use a low gear and keep your speed around 25 to 30 mph whenever possible.

• Don't ride the brakes. This is especially important when you're traveling from a high elevation to a lower one. Keeping continued pressure on your brakes can actually cause them to fail. Instead, simply slow down to a safe speed and ease off. Allow your brakes to cool and repeat this process until you've made it safely down the incline.

• Find out if your vehicle is equipped with a Tow/Haul feature. This feature can come in handy during long hauls through elevated environments.

• Keep your distance. Always try to maintain a safe distance from any vehicles in front of you. 

• Slow and steady. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Sometimes doing the right thing will mean that a convoy of irritated drivers forms behind you. Take this in stride, be patient and stick to your guns. Mindful driving will keep you safe, as well as those with whom you're sharing the road.

• Be weather aware. Weather conditions can change very quickly in the mountains. High elevations can mean excellent visibility one moment and thick fog, or wet or icy conditions the next. Check the forecast before you begin your journey and stay tuned to the latest info via radio or weather alert app.

Remember, mountain driving can put extra wear and tear on vehicles. Therefore it's important that each component is in the best working order possible. Before settling in behind the wheel, do a safety check and focus on these points:

• All mirrors 
• All lights
• All systems synced: brakes and lights
• Horn works
• Radio works
• Hitches secure
• Tires in excellent shape, including spares
• Coolants and fluids full and have extras on hand-including wiper fluid
• Cloths for wiping away moisture and an ice scraper

The 4 Key Components of Cargo Trailer Maintenance

Routine maintenance is the best way to keep your cargo trailer looking and running great. In today's post, we'll review the four basic components of cargo trailer maintenance. Take a look and keep these things in mind when considering the purchase and upkeep of a cargo trailer.

Keeping Your Trailer Clean

Many our trailers are coated with several layers of special automotive paint and sealer. Due to this special coating, it is best to use a cleaning solution designed specifically for automotive finishes. It's best to avoid using a high-powered pressure washer, as this can actually cause damage to the finish.

In most cases, hand washing is the best course of action. Use warm, soapy water and a soft clean cloth. Be sure to give your trailer a light rinse, especially if you are in an area that is affected by snow, ice or salt air and moisture. Exposure to mother nature's elements can be rough on your cargo trailer's exterior finish.

While you're focusing on cleaning, don't forget to give these areas attention:

• Lights
• Fenders
• Doors
• Windows
• Exterior hardware 

After rinsing, allow your trailer to air dry or towel dry it. If you want to give your trailer's exterior an extra boost of longevity, consider adding a coat of wax. Not only will this help protect your trailer, it'll make it look great!

Repairs and Replacements

Be sure to regularly inspect your trailer for any normal (or abnormal) wear and tear. Your trailer's joints and axles help keep the ride smooth, so make sure they stay well-lubricated. Once enough dirt and grime accumulates, the lubrication can begin to wear down, causing friction and possible breakdown.

Air Pressure and Tire Integrity

Are you checking the air pressure of your trailer's tires regularly?

The manual that came with your trailer includes details regarding the suggested pounds per square inch (psi) of inflation. This is a very important part of trailer maintenance, especially if your trailer sits for long periods of time. During periods of infrequent use, tires will naturally lose some of their air on their own. Driving with low air is dangerous and can cause a blowout!

Don't forget to check your tire treads as well. If they start looking worn out, don't put off replacing them. Check your spare tire, too while you're at it -- you never know when or if you might need it.
