What's the Difference Between Single and Tandem Axle Trailers?

When you’re ready to take the plunge into trailer ownership, some decisions will have to be made. In addition to points such as size, capacity and maneuverability, another consideration when it comes to the wonderful world of trailers is, “Which type of axle will be best?”

There are single axle trailers and tandem axle trailers. How many axles a trailer has is are what determines if it is a single or double. A single axle has two wheels and a tandem, or double axle, has four wheels.

Single axle trailers are ideal for those who have smaller, lighter loads. They are more affordable, easier to pull and park. Another benefit to single axle models is that they provide more adjustable towing angles, which make them more maneuverable than larger models. Since there are only two tires, maintenance is easier and less expensive. Those who opt for single axle trailers will need to be mindful of the fact that these are best for lighter loads. Stressing them with more than they were built to handle will wear them out more quickly and if heavy loads are what you have, then a tandem axle trailer would be a better choice.

With two axles and four tires, tandem axle models have better stability and more room, which is why they are the best choice for hefty cargo. Because they have four tires, they’re able to take heavier loads. They are very stable at higher speeds and better suited for highway driving. Since the beds are typically larger, tandem axle trailers offer more flexibility when it comes to hauling capacity. Since there is more involved in their construction, these are the pricier option. Choosing this type of trailer is advised for those who plan to haul sizeable payloads. Although they are an investment, they tend to pay for themselves in terms of durability.
